Step-By-Step Directions to Make a Paper Lantern Craft
To get started, begin by downloading the paper lantern template provided at the end of this post.
You have the option to choose between the large and small templates, and for this tutorial, I’ll be using the smaller one.
Print the template on your preferred colour of cardstock or construction paper. Each page allows you to create two lanterns.
Cut the page in half and then carefully cut out the two distinct pieces: the main part and the long strip that will serve as the handle.
Take the larger piece and fold it exactly in half. Carefully cut along the Dashed lines in the template, but be cautious not to cut all the way through; stop where the dashed line ends.
Next, unfold the paper, roll it into a cylindrical shape, and stick both ends together. Use decorative tape in a contrasting colour over the top and bottom edges. This is completely optional.
Finally, take the strip that you cut from the template and attach it to the top to create a handle for the lantern.
Your beautiful lanterns are now ready!
These paper lanterns are not only perfect for decorations but can also be strung together as a charming garland or hung over windows to illuminate your Diwali celebration.
Get creative by crafting them in a variety of vibrant colours and have a blast making these festive decorations!
For safety reasons, it’s essential to use LED lights with these lanterns and avoid using actual candles, as these are paper lanterns and could pose a fire hazard.
Which paper is best for your paper lantern craft?
If you’re aiming for a sturdy, long-lasting decoration, cardstock paper is the way to go. On the other hand, construction paper is a great choice for kids as it makes cutting easier and allows you to craft many lanterns in just 30 minutes.
For kids, I recommend starting with the smaller size template using construction paper. This template enables kids to quickly create precise and similar lanterns in no time.
Simply download the template provided at the end of the post and get started on your crafting adventure!
