Paper Weaving Fish Craft {Free Template}

This Paper Weaving Fish Craft is a creative way to make a fish, perfect for developing fine motor skills and customizable with any colours you like.

I have included Free Fish Templates with two difficulty levels: an easy one for beginners and a more challenging one for those with advanced skills. It can actively engage kids for up to 30 minutes.

Things you will need to make the Paper-weaving Fish Craft

Paper weaving FIsh Template (Download it at the end of the post)
Cardstock in any colour (for printing and weaving)
Paper Cutter
Scissors
Glue

Directions to make the Paper Weaving Fish Craft

Print out the fish-weaving template on thick, sturdy paper in any colour of your choice. It is recommended to use cardstock of at least 175 GSM thickness; otherwise, it may tear while weaving and will not be easy for kids to handle.

On the fish template, you’ll see vertical dotted lines. Cut along these lines using a paper cutter, placing the template on a cutting mat. Remember to cut only along the lines and leave a gap at the end.

After cutting the lines, cut the fish out along the edges. Also, cut out the fin.

On another page, there are eye cutouts, which you need to print on white paper and cut out. Use the rest for another project. These eyes are perfect for many of our animal crafts on the blog.

Next, cut a few 2cm wide strips from cardstock (using any contrasting colour for the best result). We use a paper trimmer to cut the strips, but if you don’t have one, mark 2cm lines and cut them with scissors.

Let’s start weaving! Take a strip and insert it into the slits of the fish template, weaving it over and under until you reach the other end.

Take the second strip and repeat the process, alternating the side you start on. See the image or video for clarity.

Continue weaving all the strips until the fish template is tightly packed from bottom to top.

Now, the Next step is to cut the extra strips projecting from the front and back sides. You can either stick the ends to a base or leave it as it is.

Glue the Eyes and the fins and the Fish is ready!
