How to Carve a Jack-o’-Lantern?

Carving a Jack-o’-lantern is a fun Halloween Activity that brings out creativity and spooky vibes.

This year, we carved our very first Jack-o’-lantern. For years, I thought it was difficult work, so I never tried it. But yesterday, we did it as a family and had an amazing time!

If you’ve never carved a pumpkin before, I highly recommend doing it with your family, especially with kids. It’s so much fun to try something new, and we loved how it lit up after carving—definitely spooky!

Let me show you how to carve a Jack-o’-lantern with this step-by-step guide and pictures. In the end, I’ve also shared some helpful tips, tricks, and a few mistakes we made that you can avoid as a first-timer!

Things You’ll Need to Carve a Jack-o’-Lantern

A Pumpkin
Double-sided Saw or Pumpkin Carving Kit
Large spoon or pumpkin scoop
Markers
Candle or LED light

Buying the Perfect Pumpkin

Choose a pumpkin that is firm, bright orange, and has a flat base to sit upright.

Also, Make sure it has smooth sides for easier carving.

Step-by-step Instructions on How to Carve a Jack-o’-Lantern

Here is how to Carve your jacko lantern from a Pumpkin in 6 steps! You don’t have to do a lot of research or Watch tutorials to do this. It is very simple and you approximately need about 30 minutes!

Step 1: Prepare Your Work Area

Lay down some old newspapers or sheets to catch the mess. Get all your tools ready and keep a bowl or plate handy to collect the seeds.

Step 2: Cut the Top Off

Using a sharp knife, cut a circular hole around the stem. You can draw a reference line with a marker to guide your cut.

The key tip here is to angle the knife inward to create a lid that won’t fall through. Ensure the opening is wide enough for your hand to fit inside so you can easily scoop out the insides.

Slice the extras in the lid using the knife.

Step 3: Scoop Out the Insides

Remove the seeds and stringy flesh using a large spoon or pumpkin scooper. Transfer everything to a bowl or plate.

Our daughter was eager to help with this part, but it took about 10 minutes to fully scoop out all the seeds and stringy bits.

You can save the seeds for roasting later if you like!

Step 4: Draw Your Design

Use a marker or pen to sketch your Jack-o’-lantern face. You can go with a classic design—like triangular eyes and a jagged grin—or get creative! If this is your first time, keep the design simple.

Step 5: Carve the Pumpkin

Carefully carve along the lines of your design using the small double-sided Saw. Gently push the pieces out.

I found that carving was easier than I had expected, and the pieces came out just as I had drawn them. It was simple to retain sharp edges and detail with the right tool.

Now, your Jack-o’-lantern is all carved and ready!

Step 6: Light It Up

Place a small candle or a battery-powered LED light inside your pumpkin. Light it up and display it!
A note: you can close the lid only if you’re using an artificial light. When we placed a candle and closed the lid, it started to burn and turn black, So better to leave it open.

Now your spooky Jack-o’-lantern is ready to welcome trick-or-treaters! Display it on your porch or in a window to enjoy the Halloween fun.
